2011 NT Titles/ King of the NT Race Report
The 2011 Norline Engineering NT Quad Titles/King of the NT were held last weekend at the Territory Quad Association's Mickett Creek track. There was a great turn-out of riders with competitors making the trip up from both Alice Springs and Katherine to vie for the coveted title of King of the NT in their respective classes.
Action in the Pro Open class was thick and fast, Honda mounted Blake Waldmann was in fine form, out to defend his title for the fifth year in a row. Race 1 was a close battle with Yamaha mounted Mark Allcorn taking the win. Waldmann rallied to take out the next three moto's convincingly. The fifth and final moto of the weekend saw Allcorn desperate to gain a second win, battling with Waldmann resulting in two contacts on the track, one of which left Waldmann crashing heavily. Taking a few minutes to recover Waldmann amazed spectators by returning to the race at the back of the pack, managing to claw his way back to third position. Waldmann's tenacious performance secured him his fifth NT Pro title in a row, Allcorn finishing second with Josh Hector finishing third after a hard and consistent performance.
The 200/300cc junior class saw Hayden Bennett take out first place honours in four moto's, however mechanical issues on moto 5 left everyone holding their breath, hoping he would finish the race. Bennett managed to get over the finish line in fifth position, still taking out the overall win. Jamie Aylott and Zoe Woods battled it out for second and third places, with Woods putting in a classy performance against the male dominated field. Aylott snatched the win in moto 5 to give him the second place win overall, with Woods in third.
Brandon Geers took out the win in moto 1 of the 90/125cc junior Comp. Class, while last years title holder Ryan Thomas suffered mechanical problems resulting in a dnf. Thomas rallied in spectacular fashion, finishing first in the remaining four moto's, with Geers on his heels. A jubilant Geers took out the overall win, with hard, consistent riding giving Ben Shenton overall second position. Thomas still achieved an overall third place win, despite the dnf in moto 1.
As always the Intermediate class saw Ashley McGough and Craig Dyer literally neck and neck for most of the five moto's. Dyer managed three wins to McGough's two, staking his claim on overall victory with McGough in second place. First time competitor in the class, Barry Flanagan, put in a very solid performance to finish a respectable third overall.
Katherine rider, Cameron Dunwell, was on a mission to win over the two day event, claiming first place honours in all five moto's of the Veterans class. Dunwell put in a top performance, leaving James Creber and Eddie Tattingham to fight it out for second and third places respectively. The Clubman class saw Eddie Tattingham ride strongly for for five straight wins, giving him the overall win. Alice Springs riders, Brad Geraghty, Michael Geraghty and Wayne Fuller rode consistently to take out 2nd, 3rd and 4th place finishes.
Last, but definitely not least, was the highly competitive 90/110cc junior Ltd. Class. Race favourite Zayne Corpus had an off in moto 1 which resulted in some bruising and having to forfeit the rest of the race meet. This left Ellie Lavercombe, her sister Emma and Teleaha Spencer to battle it out for line honours. Spencer put up a hard fight, however Ellie Lavercombe won the first place title, with Spencer and Emma Lavercombe in 2nd and 3rd places overall.
